All PAT testing is carried out in accordance with The Institute of
Electrical Engineers code of practice for "In Service Inspection And
Testing Of Electrical Equipment."
What Is Portable Appliance Testing?
The Inspection and or testing required by law of all portable electrical
appliances to assess their operational safety and the safety of
personnel operating the equipment.
What Is Classed As A "Portable Appliance"?
Generally speaking any item of electrical equipment that has a power
lead with a plug that is intended to be connected to the mains
electricity supply.
Must This Testing Be Carried Out?
The Electricity At Work Regulations 1989 state "every employer shall
ensure that work equipment is maintained in a efficient state, in
efficient working order and in good repair"
Method Statement/Test Procedure
The Sure Test Electrical engineer will report to the client
representative on arrival.
Testing will be carried out in accordance with the “Code Of Practice for
In-Service Inspection and Testing Of Electrical Equipment” second
edition 2001.
It is the responsibility of the companies’ representative to make all
Portable Appliances known to Sure Test Electrical and to ensure they are
made available. It is in both parties best interests to allow the
testing to be carried out as quickly and as efficiently as possible with
a minimum of disruption.
Sure Test Electrical will log all equipment on an inventory test log.
Detachable mains leads will be tested as separate items.
The test engineer will carry out a visual check of the appliance. If the
appliance fails the visual inspection the test engineer will carry out
minor maintenance in order that the appliance can be tested. This will
be charged at the applicable rate (see minor works below).
If the appliance passes the visual inspection the engineer will carry
out the statutory checks.
If the appliance fails any test (including the visual inspection) it
will be given a failed identification label and marked as failed in the
test log/report.
When all testing has been completed the engineer will report to the
client representative and make them aware of any equipment that has
failed.
A report will be generated when the engineer returns to the office a
copy of which will be forwarded to the client representative together
with an invoice.
